Visual Literacy
" To be literate in the twenty-first century means possessing the skills necessary to effectively construct and comfortably navigate multiplicity, to manipulate and critique information, representations, knowledge, and arguments in multiple media from a wide range of sources, and to use multiple expressive technologies including those offered by print, visual, and digital tools" (Sean Williams, 2001, p. 22).

Text Literacy
Students today must be able to locate, understand, and use informational text to become tomorrow's effective citizens. As a teacher, you are responsible for locating texts that support student learning outcomes.
These outcomes primarily focus on three goals for students:
persuasion- to change a readers' point of view or affect the readers' action
explanation- to expand the readers' understanding
convey experiences- communicate individual or group experiences (real or imagined) to others)

Digital Readers
Most types of text materials are literary or informational. As a teacher, you'll want to consider all types of text-based materials for potential inclusion into your lessons. One newer text source comes from the the use of e-readers or electronic books. What might be the advantage of using Kindles or other e-readers in your classroom?
Students who are poor readers because of dyslexia or other learning disabilities may find that reading is a challenge. Conversely, students who are gifted readers may find it a challenge to locate titles that are interesting. Digital books can help both of these types of readers.
